All existing WoW Classic realms will be automatically converted to the game’s Burning Crusade expansion with the arrival of the Burning Crusade pre-patch on May 18. On that day, players will have to choose on a per character basis whether to play on Burning Crusade servers or to transfer to Classic Era realms which won’t progress to the game’s next expansion. Cloning a character for the associated fee allows that character to be played in both versions of the game.
Many players do not want to make that choice when TBC Classic drops on June 1st. After all, a character cultivated with hours of gameplay would be great to carry over, but they started off in WoW Classic because that’s what they wanted to play. To offer a third option, Blizzard has a character cloning option, but it costs money, originally $35. This price angered fans who quickly delivered backlash to Blizzard, saying it was way too expensive. As a result, Blizzard dropped the price of the character cloning to $15.
“A lower price will likely still accomplish our goals with the new service, while allowing many more players to explore the option of playing characters on both Classic Era and Burning Crusade Classic realms,” Blizzard said.
“However, over the last week or so, we’ve gotten a very large amount of feedback from the community, and we’ve decided to lower the price. A lower price will likely still accomplish our goals with the new service, while allowing many more players to explore the option of playing characters on both Classic Era and Burning Crusade Classic realms.”
While cutting the cloning fee by more than half certainly relieves a pain point many players had with Blizzard’s recent Burning Crusade Classic announcements, the game’s shorter than usual pre-patch and controversial new microtransactions still have many in the game’s community unhappy ahead of Burning Crusade Classic’s June 1 release date.
The TBC pre-patch is scheduled to launch on Tuesday, May 18. It will introduce the Blood Elf race to the Horde and Draenei to the Alliance as well as a paid level 58 boost leading up to the grand opening of the Dark Portal on June 1.
The reason the cloning choice is so important is because of the changes TBC Classic brings with it. As the first major expansion of WoW, it introduced new races for player characters and an increase in level cap. These were among the biggest changes of the expansion, but it also changed the landscape of WoW with new content. However, many players picked up WoW Classic to return to a simpler time, before the changes of any expansions. At the same time, saying no to brand new (old) content seems kinda silly. The cloning option is the best of both worlds, so of course Blizzard put a big price tag on it.
WoW Classic players can clone their characters now ahead of the Burning Crusade’s arrival on June 1.
